FEE:
Each week the fee (minus June 30th-July 3) for 4hrs of instruction a day, 5 days for the week is $640 (this is about $32/hr). Camp prices will go up in May. This includes instruction, food, experience, and life long cooking skills! Please reach out for sibling discount of 15%. The cost of Summer Camp includes a $50 non-refundable camp deposit. If your child is unable to attend the summer camp session for which you registered, please inform us in writing as soon as possible at info@thekitchenmelrose.com. If you cancel at least 21 days before the first day of the camp, we will issue you a credit for the cost of the camp less the deposit or a refund for the cost of the camp less the deposit and the credit card processing fees we encountered. If you provide at least 14 days' notice, we will attempt to rebook the summer camp session. If rebooked, we will provide you with a 1-year credit for the camp cost minus the deposit. If we are not able to rebook the camp session or if you provide less than 14 days' notice, we regret that no refund or store credit will be issued. You are welcome to gift the camp session to another child and provide us with that child’s contact information.
CURRICULUM
Depending upon the camp selected, you can expect your child to learn some or all of the following in our hands-on classes:
1. How to be safe in the kitchen, including hand and workspace sanitizing, proper food handling, including how to wash food; knife safety;
2. How to read and follow a recipe;
3. How to arrange the kitchen workplace so that all the items needed for the recipe are located and placed nearby (mise en place);
4. How to accurately measure ingredients using measuring cups, measuring spoons, and kitchen scales;
5. How to bake/roast, stew/braise, stir-fry, make sauces;
6. The difference between whole and processed foods and how each affects health;
7. The importance of sustainability and eating what is in season;
8. How to reuse or repurpose ingredients already on hand; and
9. How to clean up the kitchen.
10. At the end of the week on Fridays, campers will be tasked with running their own 'restaurant' creating a menu, cooking, serving friends/family and cleaning up. (1-2 guests permitted)
AGES
Camp is appropriate for kids ages 10 and above. In order to ensure the maximum benefit for all children, your child must be capable of following directions and cooperating with others in the class.
